![]() Minor hematomas may be present for several weeks before attention is sought. In severe cases, the swelling may be large, tense, firm and very painful. Examples are an ear shriveled up, scarred and possibly painful. This takes several months, and the inflammation leaves your cat with a permanent disfigurement. The condition is caused in most cases by bleeding into a potential space (between the auricular cartilage and skin of the pinna) usually following traumatic injury to the cartilage and associated blood vessels. Aural hematoma surgery is a permanent solution to your pets problem, and surgical removal of hematomas can reduce scarring. The hematoma could be slowly reabsorbed (assuming the cause of the head shaking is being treated and cured). This condition is very common in dogs and rare in cats. Ear hematoma, also called aural hematoma or auricular hematoma, is a common ear problem in cats. Increased capillary fragility or bleeding tendencies may occasionally result in hematomas in animals without obvious ear disease. The blood is unable to drain away and this results in a heavy fluid filled ear which is painful. In many instances, violent head shaking or scratching as a result of ear disease, irritation or injury results in cartilaginous damage and vascular injury to branches of the great auricular artery. The pathogenesis of the condition is not fully understood. ![]()
